How to clean sticky iphone 5 buttons/mute switch?

I got something sticky (i think some kind of food was touching my phone) in the volume buttons and mute switch of my iPhone 5 (released september 2012). Now, these buttons won't work, how do i fix these without damaging the iPhone with water or anything. I have already turned on assistive touch and can survive without the buttons but it would be more convenient to have the luxury of the buttons.

You might wanna try to put an few drops of water on a CLOTH OR PHONE SCREEN CLEANER

The phone has no other damage or issues other than a sticky lock button. Is a replacement or repair covered by the iPhone's 1 year warranty? If not, would my phone provider (NTelos) be able to repair or help me find someone who can?
