How to connect a speaker to my phone?

I have a iPhone 5c and 8 ohms, 12 watt speaker. Can I connect the phone to them and listen to music? What amplifier do I need?

The key thing is that you Would Indeed need an amplifier.

Ideally, it would deliver approximately the same number of watts (RMS)
as the speaker was rated to handle,
but in a practical sense a 12 watt speaker
should be easy to drive with almost any amplifier.

Try a small one like the Radio Shack 31-1957 or any similar model,
which should be easy to find at garage sales and thrift stores.

Keep in mind that if you have only one speaker, it can be connected to only One channel of the amp.

Switch it to Mono to combine both channels of the input
so you will hear most of the sounds in the recordings you play.

If you are unsure of any aspect of doing this,
find a local expert who will help you in person.
