How to Convert DVD to iPhone 4/4S with Free Software(this situation will be the best)?

My iphone has been bouht for a long time. This year I bought the 5S and sent the old version to my father.However, we all don't know how can we transfer our dvds at house to iphone 4s supported format. Any one can tell me? If everything is free, that will be the best.
