Press x when it appears
Press Home button when done

Could also move apps in this state or put in folders

Hold your finger on one of the apps, after about 3 seconds of holding it, all of your apps should start shaking, with [x] buttons in the corner of them, you can then select which apps you would like to delete. When your done just press the home button and your screen should be back to normal.

Press and hold the app icon and press the x button. When you're done click the home screen button. That's it.

The above answers are right - but if you want them TOTALLY gone, also delete them from your iTunes. If you delete form your iPhone, they are waiting for you, in iTunes - in case you want them back without having to download them all over again.

You can uncheck the apps on your iTunes library first, and then sync your iPhone with iTunes, the apps will be deleted off your iPhone. Or you can use a 3rd party software like this iPhone file manager, it can help you delete files off iPhone easily.

So i went to the purchases list in itunes store and deleted all the ones that i didn't want but when i look at how much space all my apps are taking up it is still up to 6.2 GB of room.
