How to delete undeleteable pictures off iPhone 5?

Every time I connect my phone to my compute my phone automatically imports any new pictures to iPhoto.

Now I have no space on my phone because iTunes says I have over 8,000 pictures when I only see about 400 in my photos. When I tried to delete them manually through iPhoto on my phone, the trashcan in the bottom righthand corner turns gray.

I have spent the last 3 hours researching a re-trying the same methods:

I have gone into iTunes and tried to deselect albums but they're already deselected so I can't sync it.

I have synced all the photos from iPhoto (computer) to my phone and tried the previous method above and iTunes says I still have over 8,000 photos.

I have created multiple blank folders and tried to sync it and lo and behold I still have over 8,000 pictures on it.

I'm getting extremely frustrated and I have no idea what to do. I don't want to call Apple because they will charge me that ridiculous $29 fee and I'm a super broke college kid.

You have an iPhone and you use iPhoto and iTunes, Would that be because you have no iDea that something easier and better exists! Maybe you are just a sheep who wants to be just like everyone else.
