Owning the cheapest iphone 5 costs around $2300 over the 2 years of the contract. So you get why companies lure people by selling phones at such cheap prices initially.
You can buy a factory unlocked iphone 5 from the apple website/store. That would cost you $749. And if you get the shipped to India, you will get charged all kinds of customs and you will end up paying around $1300+.
Usually how people get iphones from the US to india is this way. They have a contact who can buy an iphone 5 (which is carrier unlocked, not factory unlocked) from ebay or amazon. Costs around $650 for a 32gb version with no signs of use. And they bring it to India when they fly in from the US. You can claim the phone to be for personal use, hence not pay any customs. But if you want an iphone for $299 forget about it.
