How to get my text message app on my iPhone 4 to work again?

I was in a group message with three other people when one guy started sending really long messages of just a single emoji. So he kept sending them and so I went out of the app and waited a whole to see if he would stop. Then after a few minutes it seemed like he stopped, so I clicked on the text message app and tried to go into it but then it just sat there for about 20 seconds trying to load the messages in my phone until it just left the app and went to my home screen. Now every time I try to open the app it does that. I have done almost everything possible to try an get it to work so please help me.

My message was being sent as an imessage, but I guess she wasn't receiving everyone of them, just getting the notifications that they were sent to her but she couldn't read them. I then responded to her, but it was sent as a text message this time and i have gotten no response. I'm not as much concerned about her responding or not, I just want to know if she will receive the message.

In my setting I have all the iMessage and everything turned on. Sometimes it will work whenever I text another iPhone but most of the time it won't. I have tried turning the phone off and back on.
