How to Get to the iPhone Root Directory

The root directory of the iPhone stores information and files that are specific to the user rather than the operating system. Apple designed the iPhone to be a closed system. Therefore, it is necessary to have a jailbroken iPhone to access the root directory. With a jailbroken iPhone you can easily access the root directory to copy, delete, add or change any of the files in the directory allowing you to customize your iPhone and many of your iPhone's applications.

Instructions

1. Open a Web browser on your computer. Go to Digidna's DiskAid website (see Resources). Download the DiskAid software onto your computer and follow the prompts to install the software onto your computer. You can purchase the software for $9.90 or you can try the software for free for 30 days. Once the software has been successfully downloaded to your computer, double-click the DiskAid icon on your screen to start the program.

2. Connect your jailbroken iPhone to a USB port on your computer using the iPhone data cable. Select the "Root Folder" option in the lower left-hand corner of the DiskAid program. The default setting is "DiskAid Folder" and you need to change this selection to "Root Folder." DiskAid displays a warning about accessing the root folder. Click that you wish to "Go Ahead." The DiskAid program switches the partition. On the left-hand side of the root folder you can now view the folders and files in your root directory.

3.To access a folder, select the folder you wish to view. In the middle column of the DiskAid program, you will now find the contents of the selected folder. Double-click on a file in any column to open the file. You are able to copy, delete, add or change any file in the root directory. To add a file to the root directory, drag the file into the appropriate folder of the root directory and the file will save automatically to your iPhone.

4. When you are finished making changes to your root directory, disconnect your iPhone from the data cable and close the DiskAid program.

If you just want to view the files of your apps download iFunbox. It is free.

  • Is it possible to get access to a full app download history on my iPhone? I mean, I can easily use iTunes to see my purchase history. From this point, I would like to know if there's a way to see if the app was downloaded afterward, or in other words, if it has been deleted and reinstalled several times after the first purchase.
