How to get videos from flash drive to play on my computer?

I have loaded videos from my iPhone 4 to a flash drive. When I try to watch the videos on my computer it says "windows media player can't play the file. The player might not support the file type or might not support the codec that was used to compress the file". I have made sure I have the latest version of windows media player and also downloaded a codec pack and nothing seems to be helping. Please help because I don't want to delete the videos off my iPhone until I make sure they are ok and they are taking up all my storage on my iPhone so I need to take them off.

Windows Media Player is an ancient program that MS had done little to update over the years. Because of that it often lacks the "codec" (a software driver) to read many of the newer video formats, include All the formats for Apple devices and most other phones.

If you look around there are codec packages you can download for WMP that will add the newer codecs to the programs. But since WMP does not automatically update itself within a few months it will be failing again.

An easier solution is download an alternative player, such as VLC, which comes with the latest codecs and does update itself every week or two to stay current with the newest formats on the market.

Your computer may miss the codec, download and install K-lite codec pack may fix the problem. K-lite codec pack is free and safe, and it includes almost all video codec and audio codec.
