You can't. WhatsApp is a pay for app on iOS (for now)*. But a plus is that you don't have to pay annually to use as you do on Android, BlackBerry & Windows Phone.
*The people behind the app plan to change this to match the other platforms, but only new customers would have to pay annually, so you should pay the $0.99 now in order to not have to pay the $0.99/year.

I'm using my iPhone which has telstra sim in it and my parents pay for that number.
