How to i find what network i'm on on my iphone 3gs (Secondhand)?

Wi-Fi on iPhone keeps saying unable to join network (my network name)? How can I fix this! It's been like this for a week but it works on my laptop fine. I tried unplugging it for a few seconds, I tried resetting network settings, I tried turning my phone off then on again, and I know I'm typing it right. I even typed it in upper case AND lower case. Does anyone know how I can fix this?
What's the difference between off-network and on-network? I'm try to work out which is best for what I want out of the service. Secondhand Iphone 4s won't work, is it black listed? We brought it from Amazon from a seller with a good reputation. But i feel now we have been ripped off, they said it wa unlocked to Virgin, Orange and vodaphone, but it doesn't work on Virgin or Vodaphone. We took it too one of the shops that unlock phones and he said it was blocked becase of an insurance claim. The seller said he doesn't understand, so now thinking we have be scammed. as anyone got any ideas to help.
My iPhone just got stolen and i didn't put on Find my iphone. Is there a way i can find it without find my iphone? I have found out that i can remove my iphone from associated devices. Does doing this erase the iphone?
