How to know how much money I have left on my Itunes card?

My friend gave me a 25dollar gift card to I-tunes and so far I spent 1.29 on one song. On other answers people said that you would see your balance on the top right corner of the Itunes and I'm just really confused because those answers were given 2 or more years ago and I'm postive the ipod had some update that changed that. So question is: Where can I check how much money I have left on my card? And once I put in the code and buy songs, those songs are immediately free right? PS Don't say I'm lacking common sense. I'm just really cautious about these types of things. :3

Your account balance can be viewed at the top right side of the "iTunes Store" window in iTunes or at the bottom of the iTunes app for iPod Touch and iPhone. Please note, you must be logged in to see your balance. After you redeem iTunes Gift Cards or iTunes Gifts, your updated balance appears in your iTunes Store account. Each time you purchase content, iTunes deducts funds from the credit until it's depleted.
The entire amount of a gift is credited to your iTunes Store account when you redeem it, so you don't need to enter your gift card number or gift code each time you want to buy something.
You can check your balance on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, or on your computer through iTunes, the Mac App Store, or the iBooks Store.
Credit balances are not available in all countries.

View your balance on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch
Tap iTunes Store, App Store, or iBooks.
In iBooks, tap Featured at the bottom of the screen.
Scroll to the bottom of page.
If you're not already signed in, tap Sign In and enter your Apple ID and password.
If you have a credit balance, you'll see it below your Apple ID. On the iTunes app on your phone, scroll all the way down. It should say the balance left near the Apple ID. If it doesn't then there's probably no money left.
