Shoot under bright lighting conditions.

Making a professional video can be a lengthy process requiring creativity, patience and possibly a bit of a budget. While many amateurs think of the production stage as the longest part, pre- production planning and editing in post-production are equally important steps that should be well thought out and executed with decisiveness. These stages are what make the video bridge the gap between an amateur production and a professional quality video. Bringing in an experienced crew in all of these stages will help even more if your production has the budget.

1. Plan out your shoot so that it will go smoothly and you know to shoot each shot from multiple angles, something called "coverage." Storyboard each shot so you'll know how the talent and props should be positioned in the frame.

2. Shoot your video, making sure to use the best equipment available, especially external audio equipment such as a boom mic. Bad audio can turn even the most well shot video into a shoddy amateur production.

3. Capture your footage onto your computer. It is recommended that you capture onto an external hard drive as high quality video takes up space very fast and can increase the risk of hard drive failure.

4. Construct a very basic sequence of shots to provide the framework for your video.

5. Trim the shots to provide continuity of action. Jeff Bass, a professor specializing in technical video at Marist College, tells his students that the mark distinguishing a good editor from a great one is how long they spend using the trim tool.

6. Send the video to a CGI program, such as Adobe After Effects, and add your desired special effects for the finishing touches. Even a simple texture effect can add a unique style to your video.

7. Export your video for the medium you wish to showcase it in. For best quality, you will want to use near full settings in export even though it will take up a massive amount of space; for Internet streaming, a lesser bandwidth is acceptable.
