How to remotely turn on and off Wi-Fi at home from another location?

I'd like to be able to turn Wi-Fi either on or off at home via iPhone App or some other method at work. When my kids finish homework, I'll turn on the Wi-Fi. Until then, it remains off.

My only thought is to use a IP controlled switch to physically cut the power to a Wi-Fi router.

Any suggestions on how I may be able to control the router remotely?

Yes I was thinking what you were thinking. You can remotely shut off the power to the plug remotely that your Wi-Fi is plugged into. Home depot or the big home stores have that also radio shack

This is dangerous.

One, set up the router to use DDNS. Most have this built in. It is a service that reports your external IP address to some server. That server can then forward traffic to you. It allows you to get to your router with an address like http://myhomerouter.ddns.org for example.

Then dig into the settings of your router. The one you are looking for is remote management. This is the dangerous part. Make VERY sure you pick a pass phrase that is seriously hard to crack, else someone could break in.

Then you can get into your routers settings from your browser on your computer at work… AND turn on/ff Wi-Fi.

Depending on your router you can set up a time the internet is available for and for who.

While your at it change the password to the router
