How to text a Droid to an IPhone?

My boyfriend is over in Afghanistan. He has an iPhone but I have a Droid so we can't use iMessage. Are there any applications that are like that? Or any that we can both download so we will be able to talk more?

WhatsApp is one app for both Android and iPhone. If you both have Facebook accounts, you can use the Facebook Messenger app. If you have Google+ accounts, you can use the Google Messenger app as well.

Voxer is one that I like to use thats available for both phones. It's pretty cool because you can record yourself and send that and actually have a conversation with the person but make sure he only does it over Wi-Fi. If he can't you can text each other with it too.

A variety of apps are available. For video calls via internet, you can use Skype.

For Voice calls and text messages via Internet, you can use Viber.

For simple text and multimedia messaging via Internet, you can use Whatsapp.

All the apps mentioned above are available on both iOS and Android.

You have a lot of options. The obvious one would be to SMS, but maybe that's not an option for cost-related reasons.

Anyway, if he has a Droid, I suspect he has a Google account and that he has Gtalk installed. You can download the imo. I'm app to your iPhone, use it to sign in to Gtalk (make sure you have your own Google account), and chat with him like that. Or maybe you can install the Google+ app, that has a messenger built in (good for video chat by the way, but you both need to use Google+).

Another popular app is Skype. You can use it to text, do voice calls (to his skypename, not to his actual phone number), and to do video calls. This option is free as well. The downside is that Skype's integration into iOS is pretty bad, at least in my experience. If you don't actually have the Skype open (and being double sure you're signed in), you probably won't notice when you get a text. It's a little better for Android.

Or you could both use the Facebook app and use that to chat.

Going back to that imo. I'm option, it would also work to let you sign in to Facebook, Skype, AIM, Gtalk, whatever, so pretty much whatever platform he uses, it could work for you.

And then there are other options still that various people will say they use and like. The point is you have plenty of options!

  • Which is better? IPhone or Droid? I understand that some people have had both an iPhone and a Droid and usually it's the one they are most used to… I'm thinking about getting an iPhone… What's your opinion?
  • What to get droid razr or iphone 4s? Contracts ending up in a couple of weeks and have been looking for a new phone. What would you prefer, what's the difference between them?
  • What is better, Iphone Or Droid? I will be purchasing a smartphone soon. I have had many ipods and I'm familiar with apple products, but I have heard that droid is better. Any suggestions?
  • Switch contacts from droid to iPhone? I'm getting an iPhone later this week and I just want to make sure I'm able to switch my contacts. I read that you have to save them to your google account but I don't know how to do that (I've been saving them to backup assistant). Can anybody help?
