You can't text period from an iPod touch anyway, since it is not a phone & texting requires phone service. What you are actually doing is I'm'ing (instant messaging).
As Anonymous said you'd have to get a specific app & the people you want to I'm with would have to do the same, like BBM for example.
You will have to get texting app I recommend textnow or freetone or if you know people with the app Kik you can get that.
