How to update my iPhone 3g to the ios 4.2.1 without having service?
How to update me iPhone 3g NOT the iPhone 3gs to ios 4.2.1 without service. Can I update it even further, to like 5.0 without service?

Final Ios version for Iphone 3g is 4.2.1. Even you can't install ios 4.3 or 5.0 or ios6. But Iphone 3gs support up to ios 6.1.3.
you need Wi-Fi connection to update your ios or try itunes via pc.
Actually, you should have the ability to update. You just can't do it from your device - you need to do it on your computer. Updating from the device was introduced in iOS 5. Go to iTunes and connect your iPhone 3G. It should tell you that there's an update available (iOS 4.2 a.k.a 4.2.1). When it says that, click on Update. (Note: You may want to do this with the computer you normally sync to if you can, because doing it from a different one will not backup and restore.) Click on Update and let it do what it needs to. When finished, your iOS version should now be 4.2.1 (8C148). This can be checked under Settings > General > About and scrolling down to Version.
