How to use a Japanese iPhone 4S in the UK?

I'm taking my Japanese iPhone 4S to the UK. I'm only going to be there for 6 months so I don't want to have to buy a new phone. It's currently locked to the network provider Softbank. I'm aware of many jailbreak solutions to unlock it myself. Will unlocking it allow me to use a UK microSIM?

You're pretty much screwed if it's Softbank. They won't unlock phones and I don't think any unlocking service can do Softbank either.

Even if it was unlocked there's the issue of data bands. Softbank uses different bands from other Japanese providers so you probably wouldn't be able to get any data.

You just need to get the phone factory unlocked and use the phone in UK without being on roaming for 6 months. If the phone is locked to Softbank, jailbreaking and unlocking won't work. You need to get the phone factory unlocked from the network to get the phone working for all services. If you need help with getting the phone unlocked, mail me for references.

  • Will my Japanese iPhone 5s work in the US? 8Unlocking it is not the issue. Its currently locked to AU, but I would take it to get unlocked after I get back. I want to know if there are any hardware differences. My friend told me he thought that US and Japanese iPhones use different antennas or something. I want to know if this is true, or if the iPhone design is standard. Will I be able to connect to a US network with it?
  • Will a straight talk iPhone work in Japan with a Japanese sim card? I'm pretty sure you can put a sim card in it but I was curious I want to go to Japan sometime but it is difficult getting a phone there being a foreigner and it is pretty expensive but I see people switch their sim cards with there phones a lot like with at&t ect. I wonder if that would work the same overseas? Like putting a japanese cell service provider's sim card in the phone? This probably sounds really stupid though but thank you!
  • Which company is my Japanese iPhone locked to? Recently bought an iPhone off someone who said the iPhone was unlocked. Put my SIM card in it and will not accept. So obviously it is still locked. I have no problem unlocking it myself, but I don't know where to go to get it unlocked as I don't know where the iPhone came from in terms of its previous carrier. The iPhone is on hard reset so I can't access the settings or anything. I'm in Japan. Does anyone know how I can find this out?
  • What sims can be used on a Japanese locked iPhone 4S? I bought a second-hand iPhone 4S which is currently locked to a Japanese sim network but I live in the UK. Can any micro sim work and is there any way to unlock my phone if needed?
