How to work the imessage on iphone 3G?

I can't find the imessage on the iphone 3G and what is the IOS5?! NEED Help

You need to go to settings, then general, then software update. Then you press it and press update, and it will update the latest software, which could be ios 5. Ios 5 is what has imessage, and make sure you have internet when you do it. Your iphone will shut off, then restart with the upadate on it. Hope this helps!

The recipient and I are both within Wi-Fi connectivity. The send button even turns blue. When I try and send MSG it says not delivered. At random times, whenever I try to iMessage my friend who has just a iPod Touch, where you type in the message will say "Text Message" instead of "iMessage." is there a way to fix this so it will always send as a iMessage instead of Text?
