How to zoom in while taking a picture on a sony xperia e?

I tried to zoom in like how you use the iphone but its not working

You mean actually zooming during a still photograph shot? So that the outer parts of the pic are streaks concentrating towards the centre? Probably not possible on most compact cameras, but check your handbook.

If you are asking about movie mode, many compacts and some DSLRs can't zoom while filming.

Always check the spec of desired features before you buy a camera.

It only zooms when framing still photos. This is just a digital crop.
