They said I had to go into o2 and claim they give me a new phone or clear my contract through consumer rights

Okay, thank you for that blog update. I'm confident that SOME one SOME where was interested in that update. But generally, blog updates are down the hall and to the left. THIS room is for answering questions. (Uh - you DO know what a "question" is, don't you? If you're not sure, go to Google, and type in the following phrase: "What is a question?")

If it's in contract with O2 then it is still under warranty.

Take it to them, say Apple say they can't repair it and let them fix or replace it under warranty.
They are normally very good with repairs to in-contract phones.
