I had this happen to mine. Were you using a charger that didn't come with the phone? Like one you bought from a gas station or store? If so, it is probably because unoriginal iPhone chargers are not compatible with iPhones. They will ruin your charging port. When this happened to mine, they had to replace my whole phone. Good thing it was less than a year old. Since yours is older than 1 year, they will not replace it for free.

Try to reset your phone by holding the power button and the home button at the same time for about 5 seconds. Wait for the phone to power off. When it comes back on, it'll show a white apple on the screen. If your phone is already dead, then there's probably nothing you can do.

[1] TRY ANOTHER GOOD CHARGER.
[2] REPLACE THE BATTERY.
[3] CHECK THE SOCKET THAT ACCEPT THE CHARGER.

First, try it with another charger: maybe your charger is broken. If that is the problem you should buy a new one and everything should be fine. If it isn't the charger, go to the apple store. They will help you and if there's something broken, they would be able to fix it most of the time. Succes!

Clean out the charging port with compressed air, restart it, and make sure its not the cable
