Take it to your carrier store. It's an issue with them
This is actually a visual bug, most of the time when I enable VPN, it "disables" Wi-Fi but it is actually still connected. You can check this by going to your Wi-Fi settings and it will show you're still connected.
I also done a speed test after this as my 3G is far slower than my Wi-Fi. The test showed a speed way too high for it to be my 3G so it must be on Wi-Fi despite the status bar saying 3G

- Can I make my own Internet network using WLAN? I'm going on holiday, and on holiday we have a usb dongle that allows a laptop to connect to the Internet. Is there anyway that I can use the dongle and create a network that my iPhone and ipad can connect to? I have no idea, but I thought WLAN might have something to do with it?
