Phone batteries do go bad after a time. They don't last forever. So maybe your battery is gone, or possibly your charger is not working correctly.

Give it time. It takes a while when the battery is completely dead (& if it was dead for a while which is what it sounds like in this case)

It might have a duff battery, but it also could very easily be a faulty Lightning charging cable. They often fail in a way where the phone recognises it has been connected to a charger but fails to receive a charge.

Check first that the charging socket isn't full of pocket lint. Use a wooden cocktail stick or other non-conductive pick to fish out any impacted debris. If that fails, try a known good Lightning cable. Finally if that fails you or your friend might still be able to get Apple to replace the battery at cost price, but I think that offer expires this month.

Have the battery replaced.
