Assuming the device itself continues to work, then it will not be able to make take calls when the network(s) it can use are no longer available. In this case, the iPhone4 could still operate as an MP3 player and connect to the internet using Wi-Fi.

If you are referring to the device just dying, that will depend on whether it is abused (dropped, thrown, etc.), battery care, and the environment (heat, humidity, etc.).

I use a first generation iPod Touch from 2007-2008. It still syncs with iTunes for new music and does what I need it to do… Including connect using BlueTooth to my car's built-in infotainment system and wired 3.5mm stereo-out to a mixing board/PA system. I don't usually connect to the internet with Wi-Fi because it can't use the current version iOS, but otherwise, it works great.

Never…

There are original iPhones that still work, though because many of the mechanisms used at the time no longer function most wouldn't use it today, but again they still can function.
