I need tips on how to keep an iPhone 5's battery life up?

I currently have an iPod touch and am planning on getting an iPhone 5 next month. I understand the touch isn't the same thing as the phone but they are similar. Basically I've had my iPod touch 4 2 yrs now & you be looking at it a lot now because the battery goes down so fast. I don't know what I did to screw up my iPod touches battery life I took good care of it got it an otterbox & everything. But now just typing this message just took about 20% of my battery out. I don't want this to happen to my iPhone because I use my phone a lot. Do you think it's because when I first got my iPod touch it was from me not letting the device die completely & then charged it? I hear when you get a new phone you're supposed to let it die completely before charging it again because that's suppose to improve battery life. I didn't do that that much with my touch.

As far as letting it die completely, iphones don't have that problem that other phone batteries have, you do not need to do this. My iphone battery has been great and all I did was charge it fully when I received it, then normally I recharge overnight whether its down to 10% or 25%, etc…
