You can disable iCloud anytime but dropbox is an alternative. If you disable iCloud youll lose your data such as contacts, calendar, email, backed up apps and iPod touch back up as well as find my iPhone.
Dropbox isn't an alternative, it's a completely different thing.
It's all about files, while iCloud also syncs contacts, calendars, notes, etc.
If you want to get rid of iCloud for some reason, the only viable alternative I know of is Google. You can't easily move your contacts and calendars to Google though, you have to put everything into your Google account manually (as in, export a calendar, import it into Google, rinse, repeat).
If you did that, you could then add your google account to your iPhone/iPad/Address Book/iCal and it'll sync your contacts and calendars just like iCloud did.

The lock button at the top of my iphone is broken, but i have been using it fine as i have turned on 'Assistive Touch' and have been using the white dot that appears on screen. However, I'm worried about turning it off, and surely the white dot will disappeaer when the phone is off, and I will have no way of turning it on? Am I correct in thinking this?
