If I travelled back in time with my iPhone, would the date change?

Let's say I went back in time to 1995. Would the date on my iPhone change to say the time it is there?

When you arrived back in 1995, you wouldn't see an iPhone again for another twelve years. The first one didn't come out until June 2007.

The GSM phone network already existed then, so it should work and (if you have it set to pick up the time & date automatically), it may show the date "then".

Or it may ignore it, or crash - it depends if the software writers put any limits in the date range code, to prevent erroneous values.

I'm going to say no… But it would have been right on the edge of possibility!

A smartphone today could potentially update its clock from the cellular network, an internet time server over Wi-Fi or cellular data, or from the GPS satellites.

In 1995 the cellular network was still in the analog era and GSM service was just beginning to roll out. If your phone is old enough it could still connect with the towers, but wouldn't be able to register with a wireless carrier because its ID numbers didn't exist yet.

802.11b Wi-Fi would not be seen until 1999, but if the phone ever could get on the internet it could have asked one of the ancient time servers already in use. I think it was a little early for Apple's own time server.

GPS became fully operational in 1993 and sends the current time and date as part of the range-finding signal. I don't think your phone even bothers to check the GPS for time though.
