Whoever invented read receipts… I think it's awful to use this with friends. I think the only time you should ever use this is if you're sending some sort of legal document to a third party. Otherwise it's not your business when they read it. And yes he can probably see it. That's the point
Read receipts are a bit more complex than you might think!
First, when you send your message, your system has to request a read receipt.
Then when it hits the recipients system they have to have their system set up to actually send the receipt.
There's nothing to force a person to have read receipts set up actually send that reply - it is their decision. The two parts of the receipt process are not hardwired together, and so yes, even if he is not sending you receipts, if you are then he can see them.
Personal opinion: I find the situation where people expect "read receipts" to be on and in use all the time just a little creepy!
