Importing pictures from iphone?

So, when I connect my phone to the computer to charge, the popup asks what I want to do. I want my pictures to be on my computer, but I also want to keep some on my phone. If I import them will they be completely gone off my phone but be on my computer? I suppose I could just email them to my phone to save them, though. So I guess just tell me (in easy to understand non-computer-geek words. What will happen if i do import my pictures to my computer.

Open the phone's folder find the images, copy them and save them on your computer late you can delete anything you want science you have a backup on you computer.
