Iphone 3gs won't go past the apple logo?

I have a iphone 3gs. I tryed to update the system in the settings it got 3 min into it then shut off. Now all it does is turn on the apple logo and then shuts of and turns back on and only goes to the apple logo. I tryed to restore it by holding the home button then plugging it in to the computer but it says that it won't restore. Can anyone help?
