IPhone 4 not showing any Wi-Fi connections? - 1
My mom gave me the job to fix her iPhone Wi-Fi problem. Lately, it hasn't been showing ANY Wi-Fi connections; even our home connection. She just recently updated her iPhone 4 and that's when the problem started. My iPod (2nd gen) and all of our computers are able to find and connect to the Wi-Fi so the problem is with her phone.
I've reset the network settings to no avail. She has to use her phone for work so I'd like it if I didn't have to reset her phone. Any suggestions?
You may have to reset the phone.
Here are several things to try. This is not a too uncommon problem. It has been happening since the first Iphone with or without software updates.
Everytime you see a "---" it is a new option to try, So I'm listing quite a few ideas I have here for you to try.
---
Try a hard reboot: -- Hold the home key and the on/off button for 10 seconds until you see the Apple logo.
See if any networks show -- if not,. Toggle your Wi-Fi on and off several times.
---
Try, again, to reset network settings: Settings>General>Reset>Reset Network Settings. (You will need to re-enter any Wi-Fi hotspot passwords.)
Again, toggle Wi-Fi slider on and off several times.
---
Time to check some router issues.
Log into your router,. (Usually 192.168.1.1 -- if unfamiliar with this, check manual or look the model up online -- typical default usernames and passwords are admin/admin) Make sure it is not set ONLY to "N" mode. You need it to support all the 802.11 protocols.ie: 802.11G -- so mixed mode (you will know what setting to change it to if it is on 802.11 N only). *You do NOT want your router on "N" mode ONLY*
If it was on N only. That will likely be the problem. If it wasn't then.
Turn off your phone completely.
Now go unplug your router (if you have more than one, unplug it too).
Now unplug the cable (or dsl) modem.
Wait 5 minutes,. Now plug them it back in.wait 2-3 minutes and turn on your Iphone.
(The rational behind this is that sometimes routers left on for a while can start refusing new connections. Or incorrectly announcing the SSID -- it is worth a shot).
---
Check the email on the Iphone. As odd as it sounds, sometimes deleting and adding the email account on the Iphone will cause it to start recognizing Wi-Fi SSID's (networks) again.
---
Try resetting All settings on the Iphone -- Settings -- General -- Reset All Settings.
---
Turn off phone.
Back to your router -- Log into router,. And change the name (SSID) -- the name it broadcasts for devices to connect.
While you are at it, change the security key passphrase. --
Save.
Unplug router, plug it back in.
Wait 2 minutes for router to fully come online.
Turn on phone.
Check again -- (Always toggle Wi-Fi on/off a few times.)
---
Check your Phones MAC address for Wi-Fi:
Settings> General> About
Scroll down,. And look at "Wi-Fi Address" -- does it have a MAC address there?
Now:
Switch the phone to Airplane mode.
Switch on Wi-Fi (turn off and back on if it was On).
Reboot the phone.
Try to connect to Wi-Fi.
Go to Settings -- General -- Bluetooth -- Turn Bluetooth ON.
Wait for it to come up.
Go to Wi-Fi Settings and see if networks appeared.
---
Turn off 3G (or 4G)
Go to Settings -- General -- Network -- Turn Cellular Data to OFF.
Now go back out, and open Safari.
Toggle Wi-Fi On and Off a few times. Toggle "Ask to Join networks" in Wi-Fi networks.
Leave Wi-Fi OFF, and Ask to Join Networks OFF.
Reboot phone.
Go turn Wi-Fi ON, and Ask to Join Networks ON.
Toggle if need be.
Turn back on Cellular Data.
---
Go to Wi-Fi networks -- Under choose a network, select Other. Input the data for your router/network.
---
Go to Settings -- General -- and select Itunes Wi-Fi Sync. Attempt to sync.
(This is just an effort to jolt it to detect networks.)
---
You can downgrade to previous version of software.
If you've synced with Itunes -- you can utilize this to go back many times.
If that doesn't work -- then there are other ways.
You will need to find the previous version, and download it.
It is a longer method -- so I will give you a link on how to do it: (this is about iOS 5. But it applies with all versions. You will just have to do some searching for the software and iOS version)

Lastly,. If nothing works -- So restoring the phone may be your last option -- It isn't so bad. Everything is in the cloud anyways, so why not?
Maybe one of those helped -- that is all I could think of off the top of my head.
