IPhone 5 unlocked: for Sprint only?

I just bought an iPhone to send it to a friend in France. I repeated twice that I wanted "an unlocked iPhone for France". I paid the full price, more than $700 and when I arrived home I see that in the receipt that my iPhone is configured to work only on Sprint network…
Is this a mistake? Will it work in France?

Yes it should work just look around online it seems to me that the sprint and Verizon 5s are both unlocked out of the box but the AT&T is not so basically all you have to do is swap out the sim with whatever your buddy in France has and one u turn it on just go into setting and a lil thing that says carrier will pop up right under your locations in your setting menu and then if he ever shan't sprint again simply change them out

Is it true that if Iphone is unlocked you can use 4g only with your own carrier(But you can make calls)? Or if it's unlocked that means you can't even make calls with it either(out of your carrier)? So if it's unlocked, then you can't make calls either?
