IPhone 6s recent text messaging?

I go to write a message on my iPhone 6s, I open the messaging app and press the button on the top right to start a new message. I can type a name and my contacts will pop up, but also old deleted contacts. Is there a list of these I can view? I don't necessarily want to delete the contacts. Is there a list in the settings or something? Or do I go through and type every letter to find each individual person.

I'm not sure if this is what you're asking but you can go into your contacts app and scroll to find a contact then tap on their name and tap on the message icon to start a message.
