Iphone tossing your phone to flip without Left-Right rotation?

This is a physics question.

Take your phone out from your pocket. Hold it out on your right hand having your thumb on the bottom middle of your phone (front side) and having your Index and middle finger on the middle of the back of your phone.

Try and do a perfect backflip.

Notice how your phone will try and rotate from left-to-right while doing the flip. It's almost impossible to do a perfect backflip.

Why is this?

Your phone (and any object) has three separate axes through it.

It turns out that for an object where these axes have different moments of inertia, then rotation about the axis with the intermediate value between the other two is unstable. For your iphone, the middle length axis goes from one side to the other and is how you are trying to "flip" it.

The reason for this gets into complex mathematics that you may not care to follow. But if an object is spinning around either the smallest or longest primary axis, then the angular momentum vector and the axes for moments of inertia become pinned together. Since the angular momentum is fixed while it's in the air, it spins stably.

But rotation around the intermediate primary axis is not trapped. The angular momentum vector can point anywhere along a set of circles that surround the object. So the angular momentum of the phone is constant, but the orientation of the object is not locked and it can tumble.

  • My left earbud is louder than my right one for iPhone 5? They used to work but now the left one is ALOT louder than the right one do does anti know what and don't tell me the whole mono and stereo settings
  • My Iphone earphones work fine on the left side but on the right it's low? You see I thought the right side is just low but actually I figured out the sound is coming out of the horizontal back opening on the headphone. When I put it in my ear from that hole the sound is very good so is there anyway I can like transfer it back to the vertical part( the part where it ususally goes in)?
  • Leaving your 4G on your iPhone 4s at all times won't waste your data right? I leave it on all the time and my plan is 300 MB and I was wondering if I had this on at all times and I don't use the web or anything I just leave my phone alone, it doesn't waste my data right? Very much appreciated!
  • IPhone 4 right speaker louder than the left? Me and my mom recently each bought an iPhone 4. While listining to music today I noticed the right speaker was clearer than the left. I the tested this out on my moms phone and it is perfectly fine on hers. I also heard that it does that because the other speaker is a "mic" but why would the mic have muffled music? And why would my moms "mic" have clear music?
