IPhone will pick up Wi-Fi but laptops won't?

My iPhone is picking up Wi-Fi at my house but my laptops won't. (I know it's picking up from the router because I shut it off and it stopped - and it's not 3G or anything like that either.
Any advice on why it would be doing this?

Have your try to check your wireless security type, is it WEP, or WPA or WPA2, because if your are using windwos XP SP 2 you will not be able to connect with router that has WPA2 security, you need to upgrade it fist to XP SP 3 to connect with WPA2 security type. But if you are using windows 7, try to login to your router and check whether is there any missing setting that need to be done on your windows in order to get connect to your router such as: registering mac address or your PC must used DHCP or static ip address to get connected, etc.

My sony vaio laptop, which is less than 3 months old is not finding any Wi-Fi networks, but I have a hotspot from AT&T and my home router that my iphone picks up both. I can't get internet unless I turn on my phone hotspot and plug it in, so it acts like a hardware connection. The Wi-Fi is on on the laptop.
