Is 80,000 a lot of money?

So I found out my Dad's salary because it's taz season and what not. I was snooping around and found a paper that has all this stuff on it. Anyways, the annual household income in my state is 62,000. My mom is a housewife and my dad works. It's just my little sister and I in our house. I'm not spoiled (although some of my friends would argue that) and turns out my dad makes 80k annually. The thing is, I don't feel like it's much because we never do much, or own any super nice cars. New, yes. But not luxurious. I don't have air pods or the newest iPhone. I don't wear brand clothes 24/7. So I honestly think a) were poor. Or b) my parents are really bad at saving money? (Considering we go out to eat a lot. I think that could be it)

You are somewhat upper middle class… Your parents probably choose to spend some money now and some money later (saving for retirement). And their choice of discretionary spending is getting mom out of the house, away from housework for a few hours to get waited upon. As for luxurious cars, $80,000 is not enough to buy luxurious cars (think closer to double what your father makes).

80k is decent for one person. But for a family of four? Unless your house is completely paid off, your parents are probably living paycheck to paycheck and are unable to save.

You don't know what poor is kid.

It's not rich or anything, but yes it is a decent amount of money that you can live comfortably off.

Uh, no, you're definitely not poor. 80K is good money, that doesn't mean rich. To own super nice cars and for you to have all those things you mention, he'd have make a lot more. And sounds like your parents are GOOD at saving money.

Its more than you have. Less than I have.

Kids should be spoiled with love, not material possessions. If you want the newest and greatest, you will have to buy it yourself. Even the wealthiest families don't all spoil their kids that way.

80 k pre tax for 4 people is not a lot of money.
i just must add: our income is much, much more than your dad's and we have much more things than your family does but my children never had the newest iphone or whatever buds u mentioned while growing up. Basic phones they did and when my middle one said he wanted iphone i told him to get a job. He did by delivering advertisement. I suggest you do the same, u sound spoiled

That's 80k before taxes, not what he actually gets in his paycheck each week. That's not a lot to maintain a household of 4 people. Going out to eat a lot certainly can wreak havoc with a budget. Since you've become interested in the topic, ask your parents to show you where the money goes and how much it costs to maintain your household. The 3 of you might be able to come up with a plan to save more money, perhaps with a goal in mind - vacation, your education, their retirement, etc. It would help if your mother got at least a part-time job.
