Is a laptop a necessity for online classes?

You may think I'm crazy… But I currently am without a pc, and have been for 6 months. I have an iPhone 5s. I'm considering switching to online courses. I already buy and use online books on my phone. Is it possible to use my phone for everything? I know I can connect a wireless keyboard to my iphone and type with it.

I'm pursuing a math degree. I may minor in computer programming, would that be possible to achieve as well? I know purchasing a cheap laptop would be easier but I need to save money in everyway possible as I'm living on my own and things are already extremely tight as they stand.

While technically no you don't need a laptop but you eventually need some kind of computer. You could probably use the ones at a library or even your school.

Jason,

I do not believe that a phone alone will be sufficient, especially if you are going to be majoring in Mathematics. I'm currently minoring in the subject and have had to use programs such as MiniTab and JMP which require a PC running a full desktop version of Windows. Also many of the websites you will use utilize certain players that also will require a full web browser as opposed to a mobile browser. Unfortunately I know this is not exactly what you wanted to hear; however, this is the personal experience I have had with this subject.

I would say go take a look at your local Best Buy, they always seem to have some decent laptops below $400 and $500. The investment will be worth your it.

Best of luck to you!

No; a phone is not sufficient for this level of study.

Eh I think so. Even just go to your local library and use the computers there.

While you will be able to do some things on your phone, like reading your textbooks, it will be difficult to properly write papers, save documents, and submit assignments without a computer. Online schools will have a list of their technology requirements and that usually includes a Windows or Mac operating system.

Consider using a public library and investing in a USB flash drive so you can save your work.

Best of luck to you!
