Is it better to update an iPhone before or after restoring it?

I just got a new phone, and I'm giving my iPhone 4s to a friend. I'm working on backing it up now, and I'm just wondering if I should update or restore it first?

It doesn't matter either way, the time all that all take is flexible. For example, if your phone has a lo t of stuff, it will back up and restore quite slowly, while if your phone contains little, then it will be opposite. The updating part also depends on the internet connection you have.

Either way, it doesn't matter, just make sure you can do something whilst waiting for it all to happen, because once all that took me 1 hour and i was super bored!

Surely itunes would have backed it up before the update?
