Is it free to call 0800 numbers?

Like. 0800 1111. Childline claims it free but on mobile? I'm under EE and have an iPhone 4.

Normal landlines are free but you may find your service provider may charge for the call. If you dial the number your service provider should have a automated message telling you that you will be charged normal rate for this number

Because ChildLine is an 0800 number, calls are free and don't show up on a BT or cable phone bill. Calls to ChildLine on 0800 1111 are currently free from all the existing networks - 3, BT Mobile, Fresh, O2, Orange, T Mobile, Virgin, Vodafone. We have been told that calls will not appear on any of these bills.

0800 numbers are free from a land line but not usually free from mobiles.

If it's not free, you just get an information message instead of the call going through, telling you that it will be chargeable and to re-dial without the first zero if you want to make the call.

LANDLINE 0800 AND 0500 numbers are FREE. It's the others you've got to be careful over: They always say that 087X numbers are "charged at National Rate" but does anybody know what this is? - and in case you don't, it's about 9 or 10p per minute. 09XX numbers should be avoided at all costs - and I DO MEAN COSTS! Anything between 10p and £1.50 per minute or part thereof - so if you see on any of those "too easy" TV competition questions that "Calls are charged at £1.50 per minute… " and then, well out of the way "Call normally last for 130 seconds… " that's just 10 seconds over two minutes, so you'll get charged for three, so the actual cost of the call is £4.50! You get more time for that much if you phone Australia!
