Is my iPhone beyond water-damage repair?

I arrived at my friend's pool during my fraternity's meeting was pushed in (with my permit and iPhone 5s). The two people that pushed me are friends, one of them less than the other. The latter one keeps blaming the first one for pushing him onto me, but I explicitly remember him holding me as he fell in.

Anyway, I have both a moral dilemma and a technical one. There's no way I can afford to fix my iPhone 5s or get a new one. Apple will charge me $300 to repair it. I want them to pay for it, but I don't want to lose their friendship. I've asked, and the first one, my closer friend, responded and is trying to help, while the second one is pretending to be confused, like he doesn't know what I'm talking about (I have 20+ witnesses).

Anyway, two questions… What should I do about repairing my phone? I can't possibly afford it, and I kept a bunch of invaluable stuff on my phone that isn't synced to the Cloud; so it's important that I get it fixed, but I don't know how to make them pay for it? I don't want to lose their friendships.

Second question: Can it be repaired? It was in the pool for 5-7 seconds. It doesn't turn on. I don't know if the LCD was fried, or if the whole unit itself was. Can it get repaired? I wouldn't want to waste $60 on an evaluation, or $120 on a shop to fix it, just to learn that it can't be fixed. I mean, I could pay $300 for Apple to fix it (guaranteed; if not it's replaced), but that would be so much more money.

I knew someone who buried his wet I phone in a bag of dry rice immediately after dropping it in water. He kept it there for 2 or 3 days, and it did dry it out. I worked for about another 5 months, but did significantly shorten its life. You could try that. Unfortunately, they can tell by a color changing strip inside the phone that it has been in water. I guess this is why they encourage you to get a water tight case or the insurance.

@mama mia
That's irrelevant. Neither do I have dry ice, nor do I want my new iPhone 5s (that I just paid $600 for) to only work for 5 months.

  • My iPhone 5 screen is beyond repair and I need to access my photos. What can I do? My iPhone 5 screen literally broke off the rest of my phone so now I can't access it. I tried plugging my phone into my laptop to use iTunes and get my stuff though there but it says I need to confirm from my iphone, which obviously I can't. Also, apparently my icloud was switched off because I went on it and it has nothing saved.Is there any other way to access everything on my phone or at least my photos?
  • Is my iPhone ruined beyond repair? Got my iPhone Friday night. I just dropped it on the sidewalk (ironic, because a few hours ago, I had ordered a protective case.) and at first, all I saw we're little paint chips and scratches on the bottom. I clicked the home screen and heard a tiny crack, and now there's a small crack running along the bottom of my phone. Is there a way to fix the crack and scratches? I'm literally crying, as this was a gift my mom gave me.
  • Iphone water indicators not pink, still possible water damage? Hypothetically, if you got your iphone 4s wet, but the water indicators are not triggered at all, is it still possible the phone has water damage on the inside that apple would find if they took it apart?
  • Iphone submerged in water, logic board has water damage? My phone was under water for 10 sec. Atleast and in my wet pocket for about 2 minutes. Led wouldnt turn off and power / lock button didn't work… Put it in rice and two days later i charge it apple logo pops up then writing pops up above the apple logo. Will the guy taking my phone to clean it out and try to fix it need my passcode? And will my contacts, apps, photos, music, internet history still be on my phone? Like when he fixes it turns and on and stuff?
