Is shopping via internet SAFE?

I'm thinking of buying an android iphone from Amazon, but I read once before that internet crime is in the billion$ a year, and once I did get ripped of by a company - by not understanding the fine print catch to it - but not for much. Though I do 98% of my shopping strictly with cash, now I'm tempted to use my credit/debit card and buy through internet. So is that kind of shopping safe? Anyone had bad experience and would advise against?

Added (1). Thanks to both answers. Alex, to keep my contact with Amazon for 6 months means what?-just keeping my account open, or do I have to be buying oher stuff at certain time intervals-like every 2 weeks-?

Shopping from Amazon is generally safe. Before you buy anything, you should read the reviews of the product that other shoppers have left.

Using the internet for shopping is safe especially if you use reputable sites like Amazon, Overstock, etc. Most banks and credit cards offer very good fraud protection and will refund you for fraudulent purchases.

My wife just bought an Android phone through Amazon wireless and is very happy with it. The only thing to keep in mind is that you are required to keep your contract for 6 months after buying your Amazon phone or you will be charged something in the range of $200 by Amazon in addition to your carriers early termination fee.
