Is the iPhone 4s/5 cheap to use on pay as you go?

The title says it all really. Just wondering whether to buy an iPhone as I'm only on pay as you go, because I simply don't want a contract.

Because it is a modern smartphone with lots of internet features you may find yourself spending a lot of money using the iPhone on pay as you go. An alternative, if you don't want a contract, is to get the iPhone SIM free and then buy a separate SIM only contract.

This is a bit like a normal contract but much cheaper per month. You can also cancel it at any point rather than being tied down for a year or two. It is just for a SIM card with minutes, texts and data though, a SIM only contract does not come with a phone (which is why you would need to get the iPhone separately). For a phone like an iPhone this would probably work out much cheaper as your 3G data will be included in the price.

I will suggest you take the pay as you go plan. It saves you loads in the long run. This however depends on your usage. If you are light user, then the pay as you go will be the best for you.heavy users always find the pay monthly deals very good.

To be honest Lauren, this question has so many variables. Hopefully I can structure a decent answer here. ^.^

YOUR DATA USAGE
It really depends how heavily you use data on your smartphone. You can switch data usage off when you are not using your phone, or you can turn off individual services such as instant Facebook notifications. Unfortunately, the main draw of a smartphone is having all these great data services at your fingertips.

YOUR PAY AS YOU GO PACKAGE
Obviously, the cost of using your phone almost entirely relies on which network you use, and which tariff you're on. Look around at all UK networks to see how much data they bundle in with their usual call packages when you top up. Many networks offer free data when you do top up. As well as summing up the packages from the big boys such as Orange, T-Mobile, O2, Three and Vodafone; also remember to compare services such as ASDA mobile, Talkmobile, Tesco Mobile, Giff Gaff, etc. These smaller networks piggyback their signal off the lager ones and often have better PAYG offerings than the big boys, who have their preferences set on contract deals.
