Is there a point to change out SIM cards when you upgrade to a new iPhone?

Since iPhone utilizes iCloud for contacts, data, etc. Is there a point of switching an older SIM card into a new iPhone you purchase? Especially if you contact your carrier to update the number?

The SIM contains the data, and allows you access to your Cloud account. Without it, you can't access what you put on iCloud.

My sim card is out but I still send emails and browse the internet using the local wi-fi from my location; since the sim card is out, I won't be charged? Also, what is cellular data?
