Is there something wrong with being in my room all day?

My family is always complaining about how I never come out of my room and the only time I do is when i'm hungry. I'm 14, I don't like my parents. My mom always wants me to do chores for her, she calls me to do something for her like every 5 minutes but says I don't do anything all day, I don't like my step dad because he's always talking about me to other people and its like he has no other topic to talk about. Another thing is my parents are embarrassing, especially my mom, so I don't like to go places with them. But yea, I have a flat screen, and iphone, ps3, and a laptop in my room so what's the point of going downstairs in the livingroom where all my step dad does is watch espn all day and there's an xbox with no Wi-Fi. They also always complain about how I never go outside, but none my age goes outside, it's always some little elementary school kids and they say that there's plenty kids that 'look' my age outside

Man, if my dad would watch ESPN all day, he would be my hero!

I hope not because I'm exactly the same way.

I used to be just like you. My dad hated when I stayed in my room all day and didn't talk to anyone. I didn't really have a reason, I just liked to be by myself. Everytime I came out my room there was nothing but people fussing at me for being in there, so what do I do? Go right back in. But, it wasn't until my sophomore year in college that I realized what all the fuss was about.

I had a roommate who was very shy and would NOT talk to me. It was the most awkward thing ever. I kept asking myself, "Why would she live with someone and not talk to them? That's so rude!" Then I realized that's what I had been doing to my family all those years. I apologized to them. Not only is it rude, but they are concerned you'll grow up to be antisocial. They want you to make friends and get some fresh air. They don't know what's going on in your head, but you have to let them know it also doesn't help when they complain about you being in there when you finally come out.

But sorry, chores is something we all have to do. It's just a life skill that you can't see now, but it will help you in the future when you get your own place.

It's OK to be introverted but not healthy to stay in your room so much. You need to make some effort to go outside your comfort zone little by little because that is the way you learn and grow. If you want to be a happy adult, start now to face some of the things that you dislike. Find ways to meet life with a more positive attitude. As time passes you will find that your situation will get better but you have to make efforts. We don't live in this world alone; all people are interdependent. Do your part as a member of the family and the world.
