Is this an unhealthy obsession?

So I'm a rookie (new guy) with the rescue squad. I have previous experience and certs from as young as 17 years old. I'm 19 now, and they want to take it real slow. I'm very limited to what I can do, even though I have my EMR; BLS; NIMS/ICS 700, 800, 100, 200; covered under med direction; and having knowledge about our trucks and equipment. I can only work with one person and he is my Asst. Chief. I report directly to the Asst. Chief.
Since my shift is only on Fridays, and he has not been there for a few weeks, I have been unable to work shifts for a few weeks. I have been missing it so much, that I jump every time there's a public relations event or class. To let you know how pitiful this is, I even downloaded a siren app on my iPhone and constantly play with it daily. My next shift is Friday, and I'm having to painfully wait. I also have an Emergency Vehicle Operations Course on Friday and Saturday and an EMS standby function on Saturday. How can I wait without pulling my hair out?

Obsessions, by clinical definition, are unhealthy. They are categorized as recurrent, persistent, unwanted, intrusive thoughts, urges or images that cause marked anxiety and distress. If this preoccupation with working is all consuming and causing significant distress/dysfunction in other areas of your life then yea, id say that classifies as an obsession. Before I'd make any hasty judgments, I'd try deleting the apps, clearing my mind and taking some time to engage in other things I enjoy in life.

  • How to tell if my boss has an unhealthy obsession with hockey? All she seems to talk about lately is the Pittsburg Penguins. More specifically, Sidney Crosby. She has changed all of her backgrounds (iPad, iPhone, computer) to something hockey related. It seems like all she is interested in is hockey! I know a lot about Sidney Crosby and I don't even watch hockey! How do I know if she needs help… And is there a rehab for hockey addicts?
