Is this legal, Was I in the wrong? This has really affected me?

So my daughter and I were going for a walk in a bush land park area and we're currently looking to buy a unit in this suburb. As we were walking back to our car from the bush my daughter wanted to show me this new app she downloaded ( the app is a property guide app and it has a feature where you can take a photo / hold the camera at someone's house and it will find out its last sold price and date e.g, this app is so popular it's even been advertised on television.) so basically she saw the first house near us and held up her iPhone to photo the house through the camera on the app( the house was double story and quite newly built, in a good area, and we were standing on the other side of the road from it.) and a lady walks onto the balcony and is staring at us ( also the unit that we had gone to see an open home at was just down the road so I was looking at it whilst my daughter was scanning the property) and then a man walks out and says very rudely " can I help you"! ( by the way we had only been standing there for 30 seconds) and so I said to him sorry we were just testing out a new app. He then walked inside and slammed his balcony door.

Is it illegal to take a photo of someone's house, like I was quite upset by this and so was my 16 year old daughter. Was I in the wrong? Would you be that upset if someone stood across the road from your house and did that?

Added (1). Yes so I meant the owners of the house were the ones who were rude

It's not illegal, but some people get bugged by it. Some people are very protective of their property and their privacy. Forget about it - but just be aware in the future that not everyone feels the same way you do.

You are fine, as long as you were not on their yard then you are allowed to take photos or videos because you are in a public area. It may look suspicious to them, I mean. (Imagine youa re in your house and have no idea what someone is doing taking photos of it) They are in their right mind to be suspicious but not rude. You didn't do anything wrong!

No it is not illegal. But I can understand why the owner was distressed. He had no idea who you were or what you were doing.

No, there's absolutely nothing illegal about taking a photo of a house for private use.
If you were to use that photo in an identifiable form and for profitable purposes, you may want to clear it with the owner or a solicitor regarding local laws.
Taking a video or video including audio can be illegal if you film people without their consent… This also depends on where you are. For example, in Queensland, Australia, it is legal to take a video, but it is illegal to take anything with audio of other people's voice, if the audio is not a conversation including yourself.

In saying that, some people may not like getting their house scanned by cameras… I certainly wouldn't like people coming around taking photos of my place.

You were doing as you're led to believe is right - everything's for sale and you have a duty to buy whatever you desire - so you -ain't- taught to think about any of the 'meaningless, annoying, details' that might stand in the way of your buying, like, oh, other people's feelings about your buying. Buying things is good. Therefore Selling things is Obligatory. And anyone against -either- is simply crazy or mean. Whether you were wrong, then, is a question of whose side you're on. Thieves are folks who Take things, you took pictures, so Thieves will support you. Victims are folks who've Lost things, the couple have lost their privacy, so Victims will support the couple.

And don't be fooled. While -all- Thieve -are- "Victims", Victims ain't -ever- thieves.

  • Is there something wrong with my phone or is there something wrong with my mom's phone? Ok so when I attempt to call my mom, it doesn't ring it just goes straight to voicemail but doesn't show on my mom's phone that she had a missed called. My messages won't go through either, but her calls and messages come through to me. We both have iPhones and they are both on. I can text everyone else, call everyone else but her.
