Is this strange for a 18year old girl?

Hey I'm 18 yro girl and I go to college. I haven't got any friends because we just started and I don't think I'll make any because of my timetable. I'm not fussed about this because I'm used to being independent. My sisters think this is really strange but I don't think I have a lot in common with people my age. For starters I look after my younger siblings all day when I'm not in college because my mother is busy working. Also I don't really go on my phone or the Internet which people think is weird. I'm always wondering why girls my age are tapping away on their iPhones. Is this normal?

What you doing is normal, what other people are doing is not and that is a fact.

I don't think its strange

To you it might be normal but if your not connected some you will be missing out. I know all to well what that's like. I had to get a Facebook page just to get an interview for a job. The worlds changing and if you don't change with it even a little then you are left behind.

Completely normal. What you describe is being mature and not at the same level as your peer group. Truth is we don't have to like or do the same things as everyone else, we just feel pressurised to do it to fit in. Congrats to you, you have come to a realisation very early on that some people never reach. If you don't like doing something don't do it. End of. To hell with fitting in. It's not all that anyway especially if you have to sacrifice your individuality and uniqueness to do it.

There's no such thing as normal these days. Everyone is different and i think it's good you don't do what all the others do! I'm guilty of being on my phone quite often but i always make time without it to.
Don't worry about meeting people in college, just be yourself and there will be others just like you that you are bound to meet soon enough! People will like you for your individuality!
Best of luck with your studies btw!

I started college last year and I had a lot of trouble making friends too. I lived in a single room, by myself, so I missed out on getting that "easy first friend" aka the roommate.

I think that you're totally fine, if you're in school go to the club fair whenever they host it and find some things you're interested in. I promise you that there are other people out there who are into the same things as you. I didn't have a Smartphone when I was a freshman so I was also the kid who was sitting around while her friends would look things up in a second.

Girls our age are always "tapping away on their iPhones" because that's what the world has come to now. That's the main way we stay connected and communicate. My school sends out dozens of emails a day to the student body and it's highly annoying most of the time and disastrous if you miss an important one. I know people who are in college and still don't have Facebook or Twitter or a Tumblr. I personally rarely get on Facebook cause there are just better things to do.

Your schedule may suck this semester, but you'll find people. Joining a club is honestly your best bet. I didn't make any friends for an entire month until I got an on-campus job that a lot of other students worked at.

You don't have to go out to crazy parties and drink a lot of cheap beer to fit in at college. All of my friends do that sort of stuff, but I'm really happy hanging out in the student union doing some of the things I like to do (reading a book or playing Pokémon) and no one gives me a hard time for not being a party person.

Don't stress. Things will come together in time.
