ITunes erased my iPhone photos?

I plugged my battery-dead iPhone into a USB port on my PC. Walked away for a while to wait for the phone to come back to life. When I got back, a message on the screen said Backing Up. OK, sounds good. It went ahead and updated the iOS. When all of this was done I discovered all my photos were gone from the phone, my iPhone contacts were gone, replaced by my Outlook contacts.

Are all my photos gone forever?

What happened is that when you updated you restored it. When you restore it, it erases everything. And if you saved the pictures to your pc you can still transfer them. But sometimes it will still backup and pictures will not save to pc. So you might have them of not. Try looking for the pictures in your pc if they are there
