ITunes - Original Files Not Found?

I haven't been able to play my music off my iTunes library for over a year now. I have 1, 800+ songs, and can only play about 30. I keep going on these forums and trying to figure it out, but everything says I need to find the file folder or location with the music - and therein lies the issue. In my iTunes Media folder, I have ONLY the 30 songs I'm able to play. I have NO IDEA where the rest of my music went. Each song has the exclamation mark next to it, and says "The song ___ could not be used because the original file could not be found. Would you like to locate it?" (Heck yeah I want to! I just don't know where the *** it went!) This is incredibly frustrating. Someone, please, tell me my computer didn't simply erase all my music. The whole reason I have all these songs on here is because I didn't want my CD's laying around, so I put All my CD's on there and got rid of them. Had I known this was going to be such a cluster, I wouldn't have done it at all! >:( I'm running Windows 7 on my computer. I don't know if it has anything to do with it, but I had all my music on an iPod, then my husband started using his iPhone on the same library. But even plugging in the iPod or phone wouldn't let my music play. Where could my music have possible gone! Is there any hope of recovering my songs, or am I royally ***?!

Click on Start then "computer" then open up your c:\ drive.

Press CTRL-F to open a search box then search for *.mp3

Let it cook for a while eventually listing all the mp3 files it found on your system. Figure out if it's just the 30 under iTunes or if it found more. Where it found the files you can then add THAT folder to iTunes.

If it only finds 30 then you are unfortunately lost your music. It will probably locate them under a different folder and you just need to re add them.

They may be in different folder on your compute. Have iTunes do a search of your computer for compatible songs.

Have you ever tried "restore iPod" and then "restore from backup" to get your music back to iPod?

  • When you load an mp3 to iTunes, do you still need the original file? I download my music through other music downloading sites/stores and I only use iTunes to organize them and get the music to my iPhone. When I download these mp3's they are stored in my iMac's Downloads folder and I have a ton of music in that file. Do I still need these mp3's or can I delete the ones just floating around in my Downloads folder?
  • Itunes local files not syncing? Ok, so I downloaded some local files onto my computer for music, and I put them in my computers itunes, why isn't going to my ipad or iphone? Doesn't it sync?
  • Itunes can't find my files and I don't know where they are? I recently downloaded around 50 or so songs using video2mp3.net. When I download the song from the website it has the option of opening the download when it's complete, saveing it, etc., and each ime i just click open because it automatically opens the song in my itunes. After syncing my music to my iphone tons of the songs have exclamation points next to them, saying that they can't be located. I can't find where my computer downloaded the files to, can someone help please!
  • Is there anywhere to buy a new or mint condition original iPhone (2g NOT 3G)? My first smartphone was the iPhone 2g but then it broke and i was trying to find a new or mint condition one for an iPod just because i love its shape and its old school/original qualities. Please let me know if you know any websites or stores that may still sell them. Hopefully in 32gb or 16gb.
